6 Things You Should Do Once You Get Married for your insurance | The Newlywed Insurance Checklist

  1. Reach out to your local agent for assistance 📱

Not sure where to start? Your local insurance agent can help you navigate the changes that come with marriage. They can review your current coverage, identify any gaps, and help you determine whether combining policies or updating existing ones makes sense for your situation.

  2. Combine/update auto policies 🚗

If you and your spouse each have your own auto insurance policy, getting married is a great time to review your options. Combining policies may simplify payments and could qualify you for a multi-vehicle or other available discount. Your agent can help you compare options and make sure both drivers and vehicles have the appropriate coverage.

  3. Update your homeowners/renters policy 🏠

Whether you're moving into your first home together or combining households, make sure your insurance reflects your new living situation. You may need to update the named insureds, address, or coverage limits to ensure both of you and your belongings are appropriately protected. If you're moving, don't forget to review your coverage before the move!

  4. Add valuable jewelry if needed 💎

Did you receive an engagement ring or wedding bands? Congratulations! Keep in mind that standard homeowners and renters policies may have limited coverage for jewelry, especially for loss or mysterious disappearance. Depending on your policy, you may want to schedule your rings or other valuable items separately to help ensure you have the protection you need. Keep receipts and appraisals handy when discussing your options with your agent.

  5. Review life insurance ❤️

Marriage often means taking on new financial responsibilities together. Life insurance can help provide financial support for your spouse if something happens to you, potentially helping with mortgage payments, everyday expenses, or other shared obligations. Review any existing coverage and discuss whether your current policies still meet your needs as a couple.

  6. Update beneficiaries 📋

Marriage is a good reminder to review the beneficiaries listed on your life insurance policies and other financial accounts, such as retirement plans. These designations can determine who receives benefits when you pass away, and they may not automatically change when you get married. Review your selections and update them where appropriate to reflect your wishes.

A little preparation now can go a long way toward protecting your future together!

If you've recently gotten married or are preparing for the big day, reach out to your local insurance agent to review your coverage and make sure you're ready for this next chapter.
