The Importance of Flood Insurance

Flood Insurance, what is it? Why would I need it? If it doesn't flood where I live very much, then what is the point of having it? These are all valid questions that many people wonder about.

What is flood insurance?

Flood Insurance is a kind of property insurance that covers your home and belongings that have been damaged by water, specifically from flooding. The kind of flooding this sort of insurance would cover would fall in the categories of damage from heavy or long periods of rain, overflowing bodies of water, melting snow, or blocked storm drainage systems.

Why you should have flood insurance

There are a number of reasons why you should have flood insurance, here are a few!

  • Most homeowners and renter's policies won't cover flood damage.

  • Flood Insurance pays to repair the structure of your home and replaces damaged personal belongings.

  • Just a few inches of water can result in thousands of dollars of damage.

  • Nearly every homeowner policy excludes flooding coverage.

  • Homeowners policies are normally only limited to covering water damage from bursting pipes.

The myths about flood insurance

  • My home won't be affected because I don't live in a high-risk flood zone.

    • While it may be true you do not live in a high-risk flood zone, it is still possible for your home to be affected by flooding.

    • 25% of flood claims nation-wide are made from people outside of high-risk flood zones.

  • My homeowner's insurance will cover flood damages.

    • Many people fall into this myth. It is highly likely your homeowner's insurance will not cover flood damages and in the case of severe flooding, you would be left with no coverage.

  • I can get flood insurance once it gets closer to flooding season.

    • While this may seem like a logical plan, flood insurance policies can often take 30 days to kick in. If you experience any flooding within those 30 days, you will not be covered yet and will be left uninsured. Be sure to start a policy sooner than later to ensure you will be covered.

Where to go from here if you don't have flood insurance but want to look into adding it

If you don't already have flood insurance, you may be wondering what the next steps are to getting flood insurance. Some homeowners policies allow for a "flood endorsement" so you just need to request we add this to your current policy. In other cases, we can write a standalone policy for flood coverage.
