Halloween is such a fun time of year! Everyone dresses up, there are all kinds of sweet treats, all the fall scents are rolling, and everyone is having fun! I'm sure you have some sweet Halloween memories of your own as well.
While it is all about having fun, we also want to be sure we are being precautious during this time, especially on Halloween day. Children are running around; it gets dark out earlier, and there are many drivers around.
If one is not careful, it can lead to a not so fun Halloween. With that, we created this simple list of tips to follow to help you have a safe Halloween!
Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Make sure children that are trick-or-treating either have bright colors on or something reflective that makes them easy to see. When children are not wearing something like this it can be hard for drivers on the road to see them. Children are twice as likely to be hit on Halloween night, so prioritize this tip.
Make sure costumes fit properly. This may seem like a small detail but can help prevent a big mess from happening if a child were to trip over their costume.
If you or a child are wearing a face mask, make sure that the mask has good eye visibility. When you are walking around at night on the streets, you do not want to have your vision minimized.
Trick-or-treat in area that you are familiar with. Going to people's homes that you know when trick-or-treating is a wise decision that can relive many worries that come up on Halloween.
If you plan to split, create a meeting spot before-hand. That way no one has to scramble trying to find the others.
Supervise all small children at all times. NEVER let them go in someone's home unsupervised to get candy.
Bring flashlight! This will make it easier to see someone if they have a flashlight and helps children see the ground better while they are walking.
Home Halloween Tips
If you plan to be out Halloween night, make sure that your home is securely locked up before you leave. People may be coming to your door while you are gone. You don't want any sort of intruders in your home.
If you have jack-o'-lanterns, do not keep candles burning inside of them unattended. We actually recommend not using real candles at all and opting for a battery powered candle. This will help prevent fires from occurring.
If you are going to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, be sure that your front door and the way up to it is well illuminated. This will help prevent accidents like falling from happening.
This one is more of a recommendation, but it is not such a bad idea to have a security camera going during this time, like a smart doorbell. This will allow you to see who is at your front door before you go and open it, helping you stay safe.
Keep your pets inside or properly put up outside. You do not want your dog terrorizing trick-or-treaters. Be sure all pets are where they ought to be before the trick-or-treaters start coming.
Candy Safety Tips
Check your child's candy. This can help eliminate a number of issues. This can help children to not eat candy they are allergic to, you'll be able to see if all the items in their candy basket are kid-friendly and appropriate, and you may even get some candy for yourself!
On a related note, make sure none of the candy looks tampered with. If there are any sort of holes or tears in the wrapper, it is best to throw it out and not risk it.
